Inspiring Pupils
Inspiring pupils
SUNRAY partner schools have access to a range of opportunities that inspire pupils to pursue science and higher education. Below are some of the opportunities available through the York Psychology Department, which we promote through our termly newsletters. Please sign up to the network and email us at sunray-network@york.ac.uk if you are interested in these opportunities. We also promote opportunities that are available through University of York Outreach and York Students in Schools.
We are often developing new materials, so if there is something you would like to see then please get in touch. Where possible we would be keen to co-design these resources with pupils and teachers to ensure they meet the needs of the community.
Inspiring young scientists
We have a range of science talks and demonstrations that we can deliver in person or online. Some of our recent activities include:
Introducing the wonderful world of the brain! (KS2)
Where do colours come from? (Primary school, Secondary school, Sixth Form)
How do we recognise faces? (KS2, Secondary school, Sixth Form)
Why do we sleep? (Secondary school)
Please contact us to enquire about availability if you have a particular topic of interest (although please note that we may not be able to accommodate all requests).
Study skills
Many researchers at York are interested in how we learn. We have developed a number of evidence-based sessions for pupils on how to optimise your study schedule. These are primarily targeted at KS4 and KS5, although could be adapted for younger pupils. The sessions can be delivered independently or combined.
How can metacognition help develop study skills?
Why are memory tests important for learning?
How to space and structure your revision
From ZZZs to AAAs: Why sleep is an important part of your study schedule
Careers in science
Many researchers and academics are happy to share their career stories with pupils. How did we become interested in psychology, and what steps did we take along the way?
