Teaching Resources
Teaching resources
A number of our projects lead to evidence-based resources for use in the classroom, which we promote through our termly newsletters. Please sign up to the network and email us at sunray-network@york.ac.uk if you are interested in these opportunities.
We are often developing new materials, so if there is something you would like to see then please get in touch. Where possible we would be keen to co-design these resources with pupils and teachers to ensure they meet the needs of the community.
Mental health and wellbeing
'Let's talk about mental health' KS3 PSHE Teaching Resource
Target audience: Secondary teachers (KS3)
This is a free resource for teachers and support staff who are looking to teach secondary school students about mental health and emotional wellbeing. This resource provides a comprehensive set of 7 modules linked to the KS3 PSHE Core Theme 1 recommended curriculum content, with both ‘shorter session’ content as well as ‘extended session’ content.
The development of this new resource was led by Dr Melanie Forster, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and academic at the University of York. You can read more about this resource here.
BReal: Building stress resilience in early adolescents' lives
Target audience: Secondary teachers (KS3)
The "BReal" project developed three evidence-based videos for schools to use to improve young people’s resilience in coping with everyday challenges: Training your Brain to Cope with Stress; Learning From Mistakes; and Building Stress Resilience. They equip young teenagers with the knowledge and practical skills to drive their own brain development in a positive direction that promotes good mental health.
BReal was developed by researchers at the University of York and the University of Oxford. Three PSHE lessons will be released later in 2024 following PSHE Association accreditation.
